Sermon in English OBEDIENCE

OBEDIENCE

One of the first memories we have of obedience – at least for the parents – is when the little child is playing near the electrical power point and tries to put in a stick. The parents rush to the child telling him to stop immediately using quite a determined voice. The child does not understand the situation but obeys because of the resolute atmosphere. The little child grows to a teenager and the will has developed and the ability to make independent choices has grown. But still the parents are present and have the command over the teenager. They ask for obedience and that is not always popular. But the grown ups understand that it will come a day when the young adults appreciate them for giving them limits. They were guided by love and care.

But what happens then, when we are adults? The word obedience sounds a little negative to me and it gives me reason to think about the issue.

To obey means that you accept that there is somebody who knows better than you and that it is a good thing to submit to somebody else.

Sermon on January 24 about Faith

Sermon on January 24, 2021 about Faith by Monica Lundgren

Jesus says; If you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ´Move from here to there,´ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. Mt 17:20 In this great and powerful way Jesus talked about faith. It is not a small subject to deal with during a few minutes. But, still, I want to say something about a definition of faith, how faith starts and how it can grow to a conviction and a power in our lives.

1. There are many shades of faith. If we say we believe, it can contain a vague assumption of something, but also a convincing knowledge. A definition of ´I believe´ could be to ´step out in the blue´ or ´lose the ground under your feet´. Faith means to lose control for a little while and then see, if we can feel the ground under our feet again.

Undervisning om bön av Catherine Granlund

Translation into English - teaching at the Ecumenical Prayer meeting in the United Methodist Church in Grankulla on January 20, 2021.

I read Psalm 42 from the Bible. The book of Psalms is my best prayer book. My feelings can go up and down, my thoughts can rest by the water brooks as in the psalm or in green pastures as in Psalm 23: He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name´s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me – we can read, we can pray, the psalms help us. We don´t always find the right words when praying and we don´t always need words because praying is also getting silent, listening, kneeling, dancing, raising of hands, folding your hands together. We can use the psalms or other written prayers. We can lean to God´s promises and his love when praying.

Wearing the uniform of Christ – when fighting

Last Sunday we spoke about being clothed in Christ and used the picture of taking on the uniform of Christ. That uniform gives us a new identity and we can become like Christ, getting his qualities. The uniform is good for every day, also for days of celebrations, for weddings and especially for the big wedding day when Jesus is coming back to earth and calls all who believe in him to the big celebration. Today we are talking about wearing the uniform of Christ in fights. This uniform is also an equipment for fighting, a spiritual armor.

What are we fighting against?

Sermon on January 10, 2021 by Monica Lundgren Gal 3:26

To be clothed in Christ

In preparing this sermon I thought about a film An officer and a gentleman. This film tells about soldiers who in their spare time go to a restaurant and many women also go there to get some male company. (The whole film tells about a wonderful love story) It appears to me that the women are attracted to men in a uniform. Why are these men so attractive? What role does the uniform play? Is the same attraction combined with other uniforms – those of nurses, policemen, pastors?

I think the uniform stands for a certain competence and a certain behaviour. Some one in a uniform should behave politely and with care about people, wanting to serve and maybe protect others. That person also have a professionality in his behaviour. There might be many positive qualities that certainly attract people. What about if that uniform is taken away? Will there be a person with as many faults and weaknesses as in anyone of us? Probably, but there could also be good qualities that never show in the profession exercised.
